Different objects require different conditions and handling. We discuss the nature, size, condition and value of your possessions before proposing an appropriate arrangement, including any specialist requirements.
Our proposal, tailored to you, will explain how the items will be held, Kent & Carington’s role and the involvement of any other specialist provider. It will also set out the agreed period, access arrangements and fees, so that you have a clear understanding before proceeding.
The arrangement for recording your possessions will be agreed at the outset. Depending on the item, the record may include photographs, film, identifying details, condition information, purchase documentation, valuations and laboratory reports.
We will confirm the process for handover and acknowledgement of receipt.
Any specialist assessment, authentication or valuation will be identified separately within your proposal.
Valuation and insurance liaison
We coordinate valuations and liaise over insurance requirements, whether you wish to review existing cover or discuss cover suited to the proposed safekeeping arrangement.
The applicable insurance arrangements will be confirmed individually, including the accepted value, basis of cover, relevant limits and exclusions, any excess and the period covered. Collection, delivery and other movements will be considered separately so that arrangements for transit are clear.
Valuation management
Valuations need to be reviewed over time. We support and arrange regular reviews to ensure your records are kept up-to-date and valuations are in line with your required insurance cover. Where a collection is under our management, we will keep you up-to-date with market-specific information and shifts that are relevant to your items.
Where a valuation review is required or advised, the scope and fee will be agreed before work begins.
Collection, delivery and access
We coordinate the movement of your possessions into and out of safekeeping, with handling and transport appropriate to the items involved. The proposed method, responsibilities, insurance arrangements and costs will be set out before any movement takes place.
Access and release are arranged through your dedicated Kent & Carington contact. This is subject to an agreed notice period and suitable verification of identity and authority. Our proposal will explain how to request. the return of an item, whether viewing is available, and any associated charges.
Collection management
Kent & Carington oversees the ongoing administration and care of collections of art, jewellery, gemstones and rare books. We maintain an up-to-date inventory of each collection, recording individual pieces, their location and supporting documentation, including provenance, purchase records, valuations and condition reports.
We coordinate the work needed to keep a collection properly maintained and protected. This includes arranging periodic valuations, liaising with insurers as holdings change, scheduling condition checks and specialist conservation, and managing transport, installation and secure custody. Acquisitions, sales and loans are recorded so that the collection’s records remain complete.
Our service provides continuity across the collection, with a single point of contact overseeing specialists, tracking outstanding work and keeping you informed. Whether pieces are held in one place or across several properties, we manage the practical details, from insurance renewal dates to the safe return of a work on loan.
